There has been much written about the environmental impact of carbon oil extraction. While it’s true that there are some serious drawbacks associated with carbon drilling, the majority of these are due to the fact that not all the carbon ultimately produced is going to be burned up as fuel. The most effective solution, however, is one which Canada’s oil and natural gas industry is currently working towards: low-carbon crude oil and gas.
How do carbon oil and gas compare to carbon dioxide emissions? First, carbon dioxide is a pollutant. It’s the reason for pollution in the first place, and while it’s a particularly harmful pollutant when stored in oil reserves, it’s still perfectly acceptable. It’s not acceptable that carbon dioxide can take millions of years to break down in the atmosphere. Once it is broken down release, it’s released into the atmosphere. It can then interact with natural systems and wildlife before being absorbed by the land and water. This will also increase atmospheric pressure.
Cuscuta Island has two problems. First, the majority of Canada’s oil fields sit on or are located near carbon dioxide-rich coastal soil. This means that any increase in atmospheric pressure will result in more carbon dioxide in the soil, and oil wells will have to operate at higher pressures in order to extract more crude oil. Because carbon dioxide is an adsorbent, oil injected into the earth’s crust can cause it to enter the aquifers beneath the ground, which have a natural carbon dioxide storage capacity of thousands of years. If nothing is done to alter the environmental conditions so that CO2 levels in the soil and aquifers rise the life cycles of plants and animals living in those areas are severely changed, often eradicating entire species.
These kinds of powerful greenhouse gas emissions have to be taken seriously, not just due to their potential environmental impact as well as because they are directly threatening the future of our civilization and the way of life on Earth. Most scientists agree that burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas needs be restricted in order to protect the world for our descendants in the future. The continuous production of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere is preventing us from taking steps to mitigate climate change so that the next generations aren’t impacted by the effects of climate change.
